An Unlikely Muse

A Staged Biographical Drama of Brahms’ Late Years Featuring

Melvin Chen piano, David Shifrin clarinet, Jack Gilpin actor
with Mihai Marica cello, and the Argus Quartet

written by Harry Clark, directed by Troy Hollar

Saturday, August 13, 8:00 pm

After declaring in 1890 that he was finished with composing, Brahms was inspired the following year with a “surge of fresh creative power” upon hearing clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld. He then wrote his last nine works including the Clarinet Trio, Clarinet Quintet, and the two Clarinet Sonatas – four touchstones of his chamber music. Actor Jack Gilpin, clarintist David Shifrin, and pianist Melvin Chen will be joined by cellist Mihai Marica and the Argus Quartet in this special staged presentation written by Harry Clark and directed by Troy Hollar.

Subscribers receive first choice of tickets. In addition to best seats in the Shed, patrons at the $100 and $60 levels receive an invitation to
a post concert reception with the artists.
