|Sonata for Clarinet and Piano
Sonata for Violin and Piano in g minor
Märchenerzählungen for Clarinet, Viola and Piano, Op 132
Clarinet Quintet in b minor, Op 115
This is a program featuring late works of composers, which complements the Saturday evening program of late Beethoven by the Emerson Quartet. Does the style of a composer change when he realizes that the end is near? Debussy’s Violin Sonata was his last work, written after a battle with cancer and coinciding with a period of poor health. On the other hand, Poulenc’s Sonata was also his last work, although he certainly didn’t know that would be the case, as he died unexpectedly from a sudden heart attack. We are honored to have David Shifrin, a Norfolk favorite, return. Jennifer Frautschi is new to Norfolk and a stellar soloist and chamber musician. Joining them are pianists Melvin Chen and Robert Blocker (Dean of the Yale School of Music). In the monumental Brahms Clarinet Quintet, with its unbelievably peaceful slow movement, Mr. Shifrin will be joined by Fellows of the Norfolk Festival.
