Turn of the Century Vienna

Friday, July 6 •  8:00PM •  Music Shed

Suite in B-flat Major for 13 Wind Instruments
Kaiser-Walzer (arr. Schoenberg)
Rosen aus dem Süden (arr. Schoenberg)
Suite for Two Violins, Cello and Piano Left Hand, Op 23

Vienna at the turn of the 20th century was a fertile musical environment for musicians at the height of their powers and an inspiration for younger composers. The Schoenberg arrangement of Johann Strauss waltzes is a combination of two of the most admired Viennese composers, and also celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Society for Private Musical Performances, for which this arrangement was written. The Korngold Suite is a lush post-Romantic work that references Viennese music of the past. Hearing this evocative music it is no surprise that Korngold went on to write those great movie scores!
