Madrigals arranged for String Quartet
String Quartet
String Quartet No. 7, in F Major, Op 59, No. 1

Written in 1806, the three Opus 59 String Quartets of Beethoven mark the peak years of his “middle period” which also produced his “Waldstein” and “Appassionata” piano sonatas, his 3rd Symphony (“Eroica”) and his Triple Concerto. In his notebooks from this time he wrote, “Can anything in the world prevent you from expressing your soul in music?” With his Opus 59 Quartets, Beethoven answers that question in music, weaving a rich and complex canvas on which the answers are explored. Complementing the Beethoven, our Quartet-In-Residence has programmed a new string quartet by GRAMMY®-winning composer Stephen Hartke, whose music is greatly influenced by medieval music as well as music from other cultures — which makes the Gesualdo Madrigals a fitting opening selection.
