Suite from L’histoire du Soldat   (The Soldier’s Story)

Experience Stravinsky’s beguiling Soldier’s Tale from 1918 in its full instrumentation: clarinet, bassoon, cornet, trombone, violin, bass and percussion. This story of the devil buying the soul of a musician has delighted audiences for 100 years. The first half features the Sonata for Flute by Poulenc, a composer who idolized Debussy, and Debussy’s own Sonata for Flute, Harp, and Viola, part of an unfinished set of six sonatas harkening back to an earlier time in French music.
