New Music Workshop
Applications for summer 2020 will be available in November 2019
Led by composer Martin Bresnick, the Norfolk New Music Workshop nurtures a philosophy of equal collaboration between composers and performers under the supervision of distinguished resident composers and guest Artist-Faculty. Fellows take part in a rigorous curriculum of coaching, masterclasses, rehearsals, discussions and performances. Ample time is allowed for composing and practicing. Each participant of the New Music Workshop will receive an Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellowship covering the full cost of tuition, housing and meals.
The Workshop is interactive in the truest sense, focusing on the process of musical creation and collaboration from concept to concert. Each composer will write a short work and collaborate on the compositions with performers over the course of the Workshop. All compositions are performed and recorded.
For summer 2019, new compositions will be workshopped in the framework of Leoš Janáček’s unique compositional method as represented in his Concertino for piano and small ensemble. The Norfolk New Music Ensemble will perform the student world premieres, and with pianist Lisa Moore, Janáček’s Concertino in the Workshop’s concert on Friday, June 28.
